Surface Media is a storytelling company that looks at the world through the lens of design. It includes print magazines Surface and Watch Journal; a digital platform at surfacemag.com; a custom publishing division, Surface Studios; and a highly regarded event program including the Design Dialogues series. Surface is launching several new initiatives in 2017 and is looking for creative and motivated individuals to join its growing team. Watch Journal is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017 and Surface magazine will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2018.

Position Overview

As a member of the Communications and Marketing team, the Distribution and Subscription Manager is responsible for proposing and closing deals with approved brand partners to increase magazine distribution in target markets as well as for creating and implementing successful marketing strategies to increase subscribers for all print and digital Surface Media platforms including Surface magazine, Watch Journal, e-newsletters, and other offers.



  • Work closely with partnerships team on agreements with hospitality brands to grow in-room distribution of Surface magazine and ensure execution

  • Work closely with operations team to manage all distributors and to identify and add new distribution partners regularly

  • Track distribution closely and ensure that all marketing materials have most up-to-date information

  • Organize shipment of all extra issue requests as well as track and ensure fulfillment of paid issue orders

  • Assist in market research to inform growth strategy for Surface distribution nationwide and beyond and execute based on plans


  • Manage, execute, and analyze all aspects of circulation including new subscriptions, renewals, complimentary subscriptions, and free-to-paid conversion programs

  • Work closely with Senior Marketing Manager on quarterly subscription goals and execute daily, weekly, monthly tactics to grow digital and print subscribers

  • Develop and execute VIP subscribers program outlining benefits and ensuring delivery

  • Manage, maintain, and communicate all circulation data as needed including a weekly report on subscriptions

  • Actively monitor retention rates and identify and execute best practices for retention

  • Maintain in-house mailing lists and coordinate with printers as needed ensuring proper data is prepared and sent on schedule

  • Identify and resolve problems related to subscription fulfillment and management

  • Coordinate subscriber-related business processes between marketing, operations, and  production vendors

  • Serve as customer support contact for all subscription issues and questions

  • Manage interns and freelance staff as needed

  • Perform all other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Experience in media and/or publishing with a background in audience development/circulation management

  • Superior sales orientation with excellent follow-through and organization

  • Aptitude for going the extra mile to achieve desired results

  • Strong marketing knowledge and analytical ability

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft programs, Subscription Genius, and/or other subscription database management tools/systems

  • Strong understanding of digital and social media

  • Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to work well with all areas of company

  • Superior customer service orientation and ability to maintain consistent positive attitude while simultaneously showcasing ability to be persistent when following through on leads

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
